JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Propane Delivery Truck Driver and Service Technician will collaborate with the DPW Mobile Fuel Ops Manager to review, assess, and safely plan for efficient mobile fueling routes. They will be responsible for daily fuel deliveries to Black Rock City (BRC) Infrastructure and approved Participant projects, and for accurately tracking all fueling activities using Fulcrum. They will assess the safety of the equipment and its location before fueling. Under the direction of the DPW Mobile Fuel Ops Manager, this role will service and repair propane systems as assigned.  

 This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: 

  • From August - September: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, based on-site out of Black Rock City, Nevada

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Daily Operations & Maintenance (60%)                                                                                                

  • Perform vehicle safety inspections at the beginning and end of every shift, ensuring that the vehicle is in good working order and has all required safety equipment, including a fire extinguisher and stocked first aid kit.
  • Use system data and communicate regularly with DPW Mobile Fuel Operations and the DPW Fuel Accounts Team to ensure accuracy of asset registration and ensure fuel safety in participant camps and art sites. 
  • Follow daily fuel delivery routes as assigned by DPW Mobile Fuel Ops Management ensuring safe and efficient mobile fuel delivery to infrastructure, artists, and theme camps.
  • Facilitate safe mobile fuel delivery and adhere to safety standards set by DPW and OSHA guidelines.
  • Communicate regularly with DPW Dispatch or the DPW Mobile Ops Management team, reporting any challenges to delivery routes, schedules, and safety issues; collaborate in resolving/finding solutions.
  • Effectively report and address fuel safety concerns with BRC Theme Camp Managers and Artist participants with guidance from DPW Fuel Management.
  • Be in on-call rotation for after-hours emergency services.
  • Liaise with Emergency Services as needed.

Documentation & Tracking (35%)

  • Accurately and completely record all assets registered in tracking paperwork and the Fulcrum app in a legible manner. 
  • Enter daily fuel fill information accurately with both tracking technology and paperwork.
  • Keep regular, accurate, and up-to-date logs of all service and repair of LP-Gas equipment, and relay reports to the DPW Operations Management.
  • Prepare written feedback for the DPW Utilities Manager describing the successes of the season, areas in need of improvement, and suggestions with the purpose of improved overall efficiency for the next year; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Maintain clear and respectful communication with the DPW Fuel Team, BRC Departments, Vendors, Participants, and Artists.
  • Work independently and with the Fuel Crew to efficiently track fuel usage. 
  • Participate in the execution of crew LNT and Waste disposal plans.
  • Support the maintenance of a clean and safe worksite.
  • Review and understand the BRC Rain Contingency Plan and Fuel Spill Response Plan and execute if needed.
  • Participate in Team Meetings and maintain related correspondence.
  • Be familiar with, understand, and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols, and behavioral standards.
  • Monitor personal well-being, be aware of work expectations, and proactively address any concerns with management.
  • Help implement Burning Man’s Integrated Plan and work with all BRC departments to ensure fuel distribution and safety.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned by or discussed with DPW Fuel Management. 


LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required 

  • Able and willing to follow standards set in necessary training that can be provided on-site:
    • Certified for handling of propane.
    • Must complete training packet provided preseason by Propane Operations Consultant. 
    • Accurate use of handheld digital devices for tracking needs
  • Working knowledge of OSHA-compliant personal protection equipment, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers.
  • Capable of climbing a ladder and safely transversing the top of the fuel storage tanks to measure the fuel levels.
  • Able to safely navigate city streets and access roads that are congested with participants, bicycles, and vehicles.
  • Proficient at navigating digital and online technology; Able to proactively engage in learning existing online applications, tools, systems, maps, and documents.
  • Expert in handling data entry with attention to accuracy; highly organized, able to prioritize, and motivated with the ability to adhere to a strict schedule. 
  • Must have been to Burning Man and be familiar with the event worksite, Black Rock City and its departments.
  • Capable of climbing a ladder and safely traversing the top of the fuel storage tanks; Able to drive safely and navigate Black Rock City streets that are congested with pedestrians, bicycles, and mutant vehicles.
  • Capable of entering and exiting a vehicle numerous times during each shift.
  • Clear, service-oriented, and professional communication, verbal and written. Experienced with using 2-way radios and following radio protocol.
  • Operates with a high level of behavioral integrity, confidentiality, and discretion of sensitive information; maintains tidiness in work ethics and the work environment, and remains calm and focused under pressure.
  • Effectively manages own time.
  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality, and low to no visibility at times.
  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.

Preferred

  • Experience working in remote wilderness and/or desert environments.
  • Familiarity with email, reading spreadsheets, and maps.
  • OSHA 10 Certification (May be earned through in-house training).
  • First-Aid knowledge.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certified for handling of propane; CETP 1.0 Basic Propane and CETP 2.2 Bobtail Operations (can be earned in-house)
  • Must have a valid CDL that is a minimum Class B with Hazmat and tanker endorsements, and a good driving record.

 

COMPENSATION

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From August - September is $1100.00 to $1300.00 per week.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • On-playa:  This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity, therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
