JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Public Works (DPW) Fly Ranch Entrance Liaison oversees and monitors the Fly Ranch activities of the water trucks of the Dust Abatement Project as well as all entrance and exit activity of Fly Ranch through the entrance gate during the hours assigned. They log and record all significant activities in and around the entrance gate and are present to direct and advise wayward activity generated through curiosity and desire to visit the property.
This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is:
- From August - September: Part-Time (5 hour shift), Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Daily Operations (90%)
- Be on site at the assigned time to occupy the post at the entrance gate to track and monitor the water trucks for the Dust Abatement Project.
- Ensure the water trucks have clear access to the pumps and address any needs or issues that may arise.
- Log and record any significant outside activities not related to the Dust Abatement Project, including visits from Law Enforcement and curious travelers.
- Address any unscheduled visitors with information and advice while maintaining authorized-only access.
- Maintain and supervise a camp station located at the entrance of the gate with overnight camping facilities.
- Maintain radio communications for safety and emergency situations.
Other Functions and Responsibilities (10%)
- Attend Crew Meetings as scheduled.
- Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations and work sites.
- Help to support COVID protocols as directed.
- Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
- Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
- Perform other duties as directed.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
- Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Clear, service-oriented and respectful communication, verbally and written. Experienced with using 2 way radios and following radio protocol.
- Able to maintain consistent organization, timeliness and tidiness in work ethics, work environment and in the handling of important information (ie, tracking inventory tools and materials, crew data, goals and timelines, payroll, etc.)
- Able to receive and integrate feedback into action, and maintain a respectful demeanor that leads by example; A team player that can follow direction and respectfully interface with collaborators.
- Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
- Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada
Preferred
- It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
COMPENSATION
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:
- From October - September is $15.00 to $16.50 per hour.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- On-site: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
